1.
The First Annual Report meeting of MINAEAST-NET took place (14-15 July 2005) at IMEL/NCSR Demokritos, Athens, Greece. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Second MINAEAST-NET Workshop, on 15th of July, 2005. During the first part of the workshop, Dr A. G. Nassiopoulou, Director of IMEL, presented the Research activities at Institute of Microelectronics (IMEL) from NCSR “Demokritos”. Other researchers from “Demokritos” presented their experience in EU projects. In the second part, presentations related to European Cooperation in the MNT domain were given by Eastern participants. A tour of the research laboratories of IMEL was provided by the local organizers. 20 participants attended the event.

2. NEXUSPLUS - Call for East/West Mini-projects

NEXUSPLUS is set to increase the active collaboration between individuals in NMS and ACC (i.e.Eastern) and Western organisations by initiating a call for “East-West Mini-projects”. These projects are designed to promote people working together without the normal contractual overhead, with the hope of future longer-term collaborations.
One page proposals are invited for a piece of work to be carried out between Eastern and Western organisations up to the value of 4-5k€; the outcome to be reported, also on one page.

The calls are open to any organisation and will be continuous but evaluations will take place at fixed periodic points. The first evaluations will take place on 15 September 2005. Subsequent evaluations will take place at six-monthly intervals.

The expectation is that the vast majority of the funding will be made available to Eastern partners with Western partners only receiving travel costs. However, where the proposal requires other arrangements, these will be considered.

The proposals will be evaluated by the NEXUSPLUS Management Committee that includes an EC representative. The results of the first evaluations and funding will be made available on the 1 st October 2005, directly to the candidates, through the NEXUS website and the the NEXUS e-zine.
Additional information about the metrics forevaluating these proposals can be found on the NEXUS web-site: http://www.nexus-mems.com.

3. Third Summerschool in Bremen, 30 July 2005 –5 August 2005: “Biosensing with channels: faster, smaller, smarter”

About 40 speakers will introduce recent developments in the field of electrophysiology: detecting analytes, characterizing molecular interactions, sequencing DNA, monitoring protein folding, microfluidic devices for high throughput detection, drug screening, artificial nanometer-sized pores in solid materials or nanoelectronics. On Friday August 5th a special workshop will focus on possible industrial applications. The 3rd International Summerschool at IUB is sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation.

4. International Semiconductor Conference (CAS 2005) ( http://www.imt.ro/cas)

The 28 th edition of the International Semiconductor Conference (CAS 2005) will be held between 2 nd of October and 4 th of October 2005 under the aegis of the IEEE-Electron Devices Society, Ministry for Education and Research, Romanian Academy, IEEE-Romania Section and Electron Devices Chapter.

The main topics are: Nanoscience and nanoengineering; Microoptics and microphotonics;Micromachined devices and circuits for microwave and millimeter wave applications; Micro and nanotechnologies for transducers, interfaces and microsystems; Micro and nanotechnologies for biomedical and environmental applications; Novel materials and intelligent materials; Power devices and microelectronics (including CAD);

Two important events, in connection with CAS, will precede the conference:

2 nd AMICOM Summer School, Sinaia , Romania , 28.09- 1.10.2005 , organized by FP6 NoE "Advanced MEMS for RF and Millimeter Wave Communications-AMICOM"( http://www.amicom.info/ ).
The first day is dedicated to “ Introduction in RF, for those from a processing background” and the second day to “Introduction to Processing, for those from an RF background”. The rest of the lectures will be focused on RF MEMS and “Vision for the future”. Participants outside AMICOM are welcome.

Micro and nanotechnologies and Multifunctional Materials for Life quality and Industry applications Workshop, Sinaia, Romania, 30. 09. 2005, organized by FP6 NoE " Multi Material Micro Manufacture: Technology and Applications-4M"- (http:// www.4m-net.org).

5. First European-Latin American Workshop on Europe - Latin America Cooperation on Circuits and Systems Design, Design Automation and Test, EURO-LAT 2005 , September 16 th , 2005- Grenoble, FRANCE

The aim of the EURO-LAT Workshop is to bring together the scientists and research teams that are interested in fostering new collaboration or have been collaborating in the fields of Circuits and Systems Design, Design Automation and Test in joint projects with active European and Latin American participation. The themes to be focused are closely related to those of ESSCIRC.

6. ASYNC 2006 12 th IEEE International Symposium on Asynchronous Circuits and Systems, March 13 rd -15 th, 2006, Grenoble, France

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
•   Mixed synchronous/asynchronous architectures, interfaces, and circuits.
•   High-speed/low-power asynchronous logic, memories, and interconnects.
